Did you know that there are tons of Ukrainians living in Brazil? It’s true! And some of them were surprised to know that there are lots of Ukrainians living in Canada as well. I have been to visit the Ukrainian communities in Brazil a couple of times and can’t wait to go back
In the late part of the 19th century, at the same time the Ukrainians began immigrating to Canada, they also began settling in the Parana province of southern Brazil. There they maintained many of the traditions of their homeland.
Only they, had a tropical twist.
For Ukrainians in Canada, the challenge was the harsh winters. In Brazil they had the heat, the rain, and the wide variety of animals that were completely unfamiliar! But they built their churches, broke the land and became successful farmers. Although many of them remain quite poor and have stayed in rural locations, they are making some progress in recent years.
Many of these Ukrainians have been in Brazil for up to five generations, and they have retained their language in part due to their rural locations and tight connection with the community. The church also plays a big role in running school and culture programs, but other groups have created dance groups and choirs, similarly to North America. There is even a Ukrainian bar in Curitiba where the local Ukrainians love to gather after rehearsals and on special occasions. The walls are covered with posters of Ukrainian performing groups from all around the world.
Many of them live in colonies where they farm wheat and barley, but also things like black beans and erva mate, which is a popular tea that you simply have to try!
I had the chance to tour around with my friends Sergio and Ruslana, a famous rock star from Ukraine, a couple of years ago. I thought they were all happy to see me – but it was Ruslana!
