We will start our tour in the Paris of Ukraine – Lviv! This beautiful and historic city is full of quaint charm, cobblestoned streets and classical architecture – take this chance to see the most famous Jewish cultural monuments that are spread across the city. Take a day trip to the city of Drohobych - the birthplace of the famous Jewish writer Bruno Schulz, and where you can visit the fascinating villas of displaced Jewish families.
Discover the rich Jewish culture in Kosiv and Vyzhnytsia, the homes of many Jewish communities, which are the cradle of Hasidism. Between the First and Second World Wars, Jews owned a large number of enterprises here, including their own locally produced and published newspaper.
Next, in Chernivtsi, we will plunge into the fascinating history of this city - Chernivtsi was a refuge of religious freedom under Austrian rule, inhabited by multiple nationalities, including a significant Jewish population. The 60,000 strong community had a significance influence in the cultural elite of the city. Visit a synagogue, converted into a cinema in the Soviet times. Explore the town of Sadagora, where you can visit the ruins of the manor of the Hassid rabbi Israel Friedman.
We arrive at the center of Jewish Zionism – Odesa! During the Russian Empire, the Odesa Jewish community was the second largest, only after Warsaw. Odesa was a lively centre of modern Jewish literature and political thought. We will walk around one of the most famous Jewish quarters - Moldavanka. Wander the wide boulevards and see the rich architecture of this stunning city.
On our way to the capital, we’ll stop in Uman, where Jews from all over the world gather every year to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. Arriving in Kyiv, you will get the unique chance to visit the moving Babi Yar Memorial Explore the many beautiful synagogues of Kyiv, and the International Solomon University. Take a day trip to Berdychiv – a hotbed of Jewish culture, where at the turn of the 19th century, Berdychiv's population was more than 80% Jewish.
